When You Hit a Plan Limit
5 min read
What You'll See
When an action needs more than your plan allows, Staxa refuses it with a message explaining which limit you reached. For example: "service limit reached for your plan". Nothing that is already running is affected.
If you use the API, these responses return HTTP 422 with the error code LIMIT_EXCEEDED. The error details include limit (which limit was hit) and upgrade_to (the next plan up), so your tooling can react.
Limit by Limit
- Tenants: On Free, creating a third tenant is refused. On paid plans you can keep going, and each extra tenant is billed at your plan's rate. A tenant that's being deleted still counts until its teardown finishes.
- Services per tenant: Adding a service beyond the limit is refused. Remove a service from that tenant or upgrade.
- Resource sizes: Choosing a size your plan doesn't include is refused. Pick a smaller size or upgrade.
- Private registries: Connecting another registry beyond the limit is refused.
- Network rules: Adding a rule beyond the per-tenant limit is refused. Remove an expired or unused rule first.
- Custom domains: Adding a custom domain on Free is refused.
- Concurrent builds: Never refused. Extra builds wait in the queue until a slot frees up.
Paused Tenants
If your account holds more tenants than the plan allows (for example, after moving from a paid plan to Free), Staxa keeps your oldest tenants running and pauses the newest ones, within about five minutes.
A paused tenant is scaled to zero, but its data, database, and configuration are kept. Deploys to it are refused with a message saying it's paused.
Paused tenants come back on their own when you either:
- Upgrade your plan, or
- Delete a tenant, which moves the next paused one inside the limit
Paused tenants still count towards your limit, because they still hold your data.
Getting Unblocked
- Check the Usage panel on the Plan & billing page to see which limit you're at
- Free up room (delete a tenant, service, or rule you no longer need), or
- Upgrade. See Managing Your Subscription
